Estate agent from Italy wins poker prize in Prague
Salvatore Bonavena has become the first Italian player to win a European Poker Tour (EPT) event.The 44-year-old, who works as an estate agent in the southern Italian town of Cessaniti, beat compatriot Massimo Di Cicco heads-up to clinch the 774,000 (£692,554) first prize in Prague on Saturday (December 13th).
Bonavena also became only the sixth player in the history of the EPT to win a tournament as an amateur.
Held at the Hilton Prague Hotel, the 5,250 buy-in event attracted a field of 570 players, with 40 different nationalities represented at the tables.
Spain's Raul Mestre was the first player to be eliminated from the final table on Saturday, leaving the tournament in eighth place with 71,800.
Di Cicco, who qualified for the event online with PokerStars, pocketed 445,000 for second place and Canadian player Andrew Chen enjoyed a 257,000 payday in third.
The next event on the EPT schedule is the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, which begins in the Bahamas on January 5th.
