Northern Irish poker pro clinches $1 million prize
Marty Smyth clinched the biggest win of his card-playing career by taking down the Ladbrokes Poker Million VII in London at the weekend. The Belfast-based poker pro beat Dubliner Eoghan O'Dea in heads-up play to scoop the $1 million (£657,300) first prize at the event, which was broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Smyth managed to recover from a difficult start to the championship, battling back into contention after losing most of his chips in the first few hands of the game.
"To come back and win $1 million is probably the highlight of my career. It just shows it's never over until it's over," he said afterwards.
Smyth, who is sponsored by boylepoker.com, came second in the Ladbrokes Poker Million last year and placed sixth at the 2006 event. He also won his first World Series of Poker bracelet in Las Vegas this year.
Paul Spillane, head of poker at boylepoker.com, described the Northern Irishman as "a unique poker talent".
