Marty Smyth, a professional poker player from Belfast, is celebrating after taking a $1 million Jackpot at the Ladbrokes Poker Million VII, which was held over the weekend in London.
The victory is his biggest cash win so far, and came as a surprise after he clawed his way back into the running following a terrible start to the tournament.
“I got off to a bad start” Smyth said, “I played a big hand and thought I was winning but it turns out I wasn’t. At that stage, bookmakers were offering odds of 66/1.”
The final of the poker tournament was televised, and four out of the six players on the final table were from Ireland.
Smyth said that the final table went very well for him. “Poker is a mixture of skill and luck. I like to think I played quite well but certainly after that big hand lots of things went my way.”
Smyth plans to invest a lot of his winnings. “I’m fairly sensible,” he explained, “I’ve enjoyed a lot of success in the last couple of years, but I’m aware that might not be the case forever. Any time I get a big win like this, I try to be sensible and invest the lion’s share of it.”
