Arsenal, Aston Villa
Arsenal's chances of securing the English Premier League have been diminished by the news that new captain Cesc Fabregas is out of action for up to four months. The Spaniard damaged knee ligaments in a challenge with compatriot Xabi Alonso during the recent match against league rivals Liverpool and has been told by doctors that he faces an extended period on the sidelines.
At 20/1 to win the league, Arsenal are still a good outside bet, but the absence of Fabregas will exacerbate the problems with consistency that Arsene Wenger's men have experienced this season.
Discussing his options, the Frenchman hinted that he would delve into the transfer market in January.
"It is more likely [that we will buy] but we also have internal solutions and we are not desperate," said Wenger.
"But we also have a small squad so we have to be realistic. The news is not good.
"It will take three to four months, we count four. He will be working hard to come back earlier but I count four months."
If Wenger makes an uncharacteristic bid for a big star such as Russia's Andrei Arshavin or Aston Villa's Gareth Barry, the Gunners could still be in with a chance of piping Chelsea, Liverpool and current champions Manchester United to the post.
First though, Wenger will want to catch third-placed Villa who sit three points ahead on 34.
Villa are home favourites for Friday's Boxing Day clash at Villa Park at 6/4. Arsenal are 15/8 while a draw is priced at 9/4.
Despite their good league position, Villa are still 50/1 to win the title.
