The Harrah’s New Orleans Winter Bayou Poker Challenge Day 1 has just concluded. The event is a satellite tournament for the World Series of Poker, and took place at Harrah’s Casino in New Orleans.
This year, there were 103 players in attendance, each paying a $5,00 buy in, to create a prize pool of $499,550, with $158,290 for the first prize winner. In addition to the prize money, the winner will also receive a seat at the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event, along with $1,000 in travel money.
Previous winner Andy Philachack, and Circuit Championship winner Nick Ceci were both notably absent from the tournament, although last year’s second place player Timothy Miles was present, but he busted out early when his pocket aces fell to a set. Regular player Paul Prudhomme also busted out early in the day.
By the end of day one, only 33 players remained in the tournament. The current leader is William ‘wilpay’ Payne, with a strong 270,000 chips. Justin Allen sits in second place with 138,000, and BJ McBrayer is a close third with 109,000.
