Poker tops list of Lycos search terms for third straight year.
'Poker' has emerged as the most popular term on internet search engine Lycos for the third year in succession.Unveiling the Lycos 50 Top Search Terms of 2008 yesterday (December 10th), the US company revealed that more users searched for 'poker' than any other term from January 1st to December 1st this year.
The card game generated five per cent more search activity than Paris Hilton, who beat Sarah Palin, Britney Spears and Pamela Anderson to be crowned the most searched-for woman on Lycos in 2008.
According to Lycos, poker's popularity with internet users has been boosted by "the continued success of the World Poker Tour and year-round televised celebrity poker tournaments".
Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, who was ranked fourth in Lycos' male search category, is one celebrity who has kept poker in the public eye recently.
The 23-year-old American, who won eight gold medals at the Beijing Games in August, was recently spotted playing with poker legends such as Doyle Brunson in Las Vegas.
