Encouraging outlook for British casino operators
An industry expert has said that casino operators in the UK should be able to "hang on" and outlast the current financial crisis.Hugh Sorrill, deputy editor of Casino Review, admitted that gambling firms face challenging conditions at the moment, with the economic downturn coming soon after revenues had taken a knock from the introduction of the smoking ban.
However, he claimed that British casino operators are currently better-placed than many of their counterparts in the US, where the development plans of major firms have been badly hit by the recession.
"There may be one or two more closures, but they have been through this before and they will probably hang on," Mr Sorrill said of the outlook for UK-based gaming firms.
"Places like Las Vegas and the off-strip casinos in Atlantic City are struggling very much in the economic climate," he added.
Huddersfield's Casino Red became a casualty of the credit crunch in November, when the £5 million venue was forced to close just eight weeks after opening.
