Former chef wins 2009 Aussie Millions

Big win for Australian poker player in Melbourne.

Stewart Scott, a former chef from New South Wales, was crowned the 2009 Aussie Millions champion in Melbourne on Saturday (January 24th).

The 36-year-old won A$2 million (£951,842) after outlasting a field of 680 players, including celebrity card sharps such as Shane Warne and Mark Philippoussis, at Australia's premier poker tournament.

Scott held the chip lead going into the eight-player final table at the Crown Casino and eventually defeated American Peter Rho in a heads-up battle to capture the title.

English pair Barney Boatman and Richard Ashby both made it to the final table but were eliminated in eight and seventh place respectively, with Scott becoming the first Australian player to win the Aussie Millions since John Maver in 2002.

Ashby was rewarded with A$150,000 for his display, while Boatman left Melbourne with A$100,000.

Last year's Aussie Millions was won by Alexander Kostritsyn of Russia.
