Super-fast broadband is good news for internet casinos, says expert

The recent growth of online gambling portals has been boosted by the roll-out of high-speed broadband services, an industry expert has stated.

Warwick Bartlett, lead partner at Global Betting and Gaming Consultants, said that the availability of faster internet connections is helping online casino operators to take business from the "traditional bricks-and-mortar" gaming venues.

However, he also claimed that it is possible for land-based casinos and online services to complement each other.

"What is fuelling the growth is the roll-out of broadband, which makes using the internet so much quicker and a more enjoyable experience for the consumer," Mr Bartlett explained.

Commenting on ways in which the two forms of gambling can be used together, he cited the example of casinos which hold qualifying events for poker tournaments online, before staging the main event in a land-based venue.

According to figures published by the Gambling Commission in 2007, six per cent of the population use the internet to access gambling services.
