Gaming Firm Introduces Outdoor Bingo

Al fresco bingo launched by Gala in Staffordshire.

Gala Bingo is attempting to lessen the impact of the public smoking ban by offering bingo games which can be played outside.

The operator recently unveiled the al fresco bingo terminals at its venue in Fenton, Staffordshire, where staff members are hoping to attract more players who may have been put off by the smoking ban.

According to local newspaper the Sentinel, Gala has created heated outdoor shelters containing an electronic form of bingo, with prizes ranging from £10 to £1,000.

Robert Jones, assistant manager at the Fenton club, told the newspaper: "Just like in any other business, we have to find out what our customer wants.

"Since the smoking ban was introduced we've seen smaller clubs closing right across the country. But bigger groups such as Gala have been able to invest in things like this."

Speaking after the smoking ban was introduced in Scotland in 2007, Gala's chief executive Neil Goulden told the BBC that its core customer base had been reduced by about eight per cent.
