Casino portal wants poker event at Olympics.
A UK-based gaming portal has claimed that poker should be officially recognised as an Olympic event by 2016.With public interest in the Olympics still high following the exploits of the British team in Beijing last year, circuscasino.com is hoping to drum up support for the inclusion of poker at the Games.
The company, which is part of Stanley Casinos, believes that poker should feature as a 'demonstration sport' at the 2012 Olympics in London, before graduating to become a full event in 2016.
"Poker's appeal is global, it transcends gender and age and is the fastest-growing sport in the world - it's ripe for Olympic recognition," commented Peter Nolan of circuscasino.com.
"Millions play every week, millions more watch it on TV, but perhaps more importantly, we've got some world-renowned British players," he added.
The online casino has put together a 'fantasy' Olympic poker team for Great Britain which includes players such as Neil Channing, Dave Ulliott and Victoria Coren.
London-based Channing won the Irish Poker Open in March 2008.
