Poker Goes Mainstream With Pop Song

Poker song tipped for chart-topping success

The success of a new song about poker has been greeted as evidence of the card game's growing influence in mainstream culture.

Poker Face, a track by New York-based newcomer Lady GaGa, has already spent several weeks at number one in the Australian chart and is expected to become the artist's second UK release later this month.

According to pokernetwork.com, the heavy use of poker terminology in the song's lyrics is an "example of how poker has gone mainstream" and can be viewed as a result of "the increased numbers of poker tournaments and card rooms around the world".

The website adds: "Lady GaGa's Poker Face is proof that poker is a powerful influence in all aspects of today’s culture, suggesting that poker isn't just a fad."

Lady GaGa has been tipped to hit the number spot in the UK with current single Just Dance this weekend.

The 22-year-old - real name Stefani Joanne Germanotta - was recently included in the BBC's Sound of 2009 longlist.
