Poker argument gets card player of the hook in US.
The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) stepped in to help a Colorado man accused of holding illegal gambling games, by proving to a court that poker is a game of skill and not chance.Kevin Raley had organised poker nights with his friends, rightly believing that he was not breaking the law.
However, he was arrested and looked set to be convicted until the PPA came to the rescue.
PPA director for Colorado Gary Reed explained that it was the latest in a line of cases where poker had been separated from games of chance.
"The PPA is pleased with the outcome of this case," he said.
"It is further confirmation that poker is indeed a game of skill, not chance.
"At the same time, the not guilty verdict cements the rights of Colorado citizens to enjoy the American pastime of poker and will allow law enforcement to use its scarce resources to investigate real unlawful activity in the state, not poker games."
Meanwhile, the World Series of Poker recently announced its schedule, complete with a $40,000 one-off event to celebrate its 40th run.
