This year’s World Series of Poker will kick off on May 27th. The event will have a similar format to last year, with a four month break before the final table of the No-Limit texas hold’em event. There will be 57 gold bracelet events – two more than there was last year, but the overall event list is getting a reshuffle.
There will be a new $40,000 no-limit Hold’em event, which will be the second most expensive buy-in tournament. Only the H.O.R.S.E. tournament is more expensive this year, with a $50,000 buy in.
There will also be a $1,000 buy-in event during the first week, which aims to attract a record attendance for a non main-event tournament.
Most attention, however, has gone to the exclusion of the re-buy events. Five such events have been dropped from the schedule. Phil Hellmuth said “I think that’s a mistake”. He liked the re-buy tournaments not because he likes to spend money himself, to stay in a tournament, but because his opponents assume they will have to, and therefore don’t paly as well as they should.
He explained that former champions such as himself and Johnny Chan needed only one buy-in to do well in a re-buy tournament. Adding, “I don’t think you can buy a bracelet”.
