Area of northern Spain could offer Las Vegas-style casino gaming.
Ontinena, a sleepy village in northern Spain, could soon have a casino city to rival Las Vegas as its neighbour under plans drawn up by International Leisure Development (ILD).The London-based company is hoping to convert a barren stretch of land on the edge of the Los Monegros desert into a major gambling centre known as La Scala, the Guardian reports.
If it goes ahead, the project will bring 32 casino-hotels to the area, situated in a city the size of Bath which will aim to attract 15 million visitors a year by 2012.
Located an hour away from Zaragoza, La Scala will also offer theme parks and other leisure facilities, with ILD hoping that people from across Europe will travel to the resort for a few days of gaming and relaxation.
"Most visitors should come from Europe. It will be easy for people to get here for a weekend," the company's Jaime Riera told the newspaper.
He also said that the development will be "committed to the environment and sustainability", despite the concerns of some local residents.
On its website, ILD describes LA Scala as "a destination city of leisure for all ages".
