New gambling venues can contribute to regeneration, says BCA spokesperson

The jobs created by new casino developments could help UK locations currently struggling as a result of the economic downturn, it has been claimed.

A spokesperson for the British Casino Association (BCA) explained that the 16 new casinos licensed under the government's new gambling legislation last year will have a positive impact on their surroundings.

He said that although some of the new casinos will simply be conversions of existing premises, the developments are likely to create new jobs and stimulate economic activity.

However, the spokesperson also warned against viewing the new casinos as a complete regeneration solution.

"They will be employing croupiers, front of house, bar staff, receptionists, chefs et cetera, but I think they need to be seen as part of an important mix within any local economy, as opposed to the 'silver bullet' that will entirely, on their own, regenerate it," he explained.

Newham, the east London borough which is one of eight locations selected for a new large casino, could choose to house the venue in the Excel conference centre, according to recent reports.
