Mike Sexton to testify in Mount Pleasant poker trial.

Mike Sexton, a poker pro who may be familiar to fans of televised tournaments, is to testify in court about the nature of the world-famous card game in the US.

According to news reports, Mr Sexton - a professional for three decades and host of the World Poker Tour - will be called as an expert witness in the trial of five people arrested for allegedly taking part in illegal gambling.

Police invaded a private home in 2006 after a poker tournament in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, was advertised on the internet.

In his affidavit, Sexton commented: "One of the reasons that many analyses are incorrect is because the object of poker is grossly misunderstood."

Sexton will attempt to convince the court that poker is a game of skill rather than chance, a concept which forms the basis of the players' defence.

He added that the aim of a poker player should not be to win the most hands but to make the right decisions that will lead to winning as much money as possible.
