Speculation over future of Gala's poker tour

Gala Casinos British Poker Tour not returning for 2009?

Claims that the Gala Casinos British Poker Tour (GCBPT) has become the latest victim of the economic downturn have begun to circulate on poker websites.

The tour usually begins in late February but no dates have yet been released for the 2009 series, suggesting that it is unlikely to return for a third run this year.

According to CardPlayer Europe, Gala recently failed to respond to a request for information about its plans for this year's poker tour.

The grand final of the 2008 tour took place at Bristol's Harbourside Casino in December, with Alan Vinson pocketing £83,000 for winning the main event, which was broadcast by Setanta Sports.

Vinson also received a World Series of Poker package for his victory, while runner-up Rob Akery left Bristol with £52,000 and a trip to the Aussie Millions.

The main rival to the GCBPT, the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour, has already got underway for 2009, with the first leg taking place in Brighton last month.
