Lincolnshire resort provides venue for amateur poker championship.
Over 500 of the UK's best amateur poker players flocked to Cleethorpes for the Live Pub Poker League (LPPL) National Championships last weekend.Taking place at the seaside resort's Thorpe Park holiday camp from March 13th to 15th, the event saw Hull-based player Dave 'The Hustler' Hunter crowned national champion after three days of thrilling action at the poker table.
Organiser Neal Prest told the Grimsby Telegraph that the amateur poker league's swelling ranks had helped the tournament to set a new attendance record in Cleethorpes.
"We broke the record for the number of players at one event. The LPPL has 20,000 members and is growing fast," he said.
Instead of competing for cash, participants in the league play for chips that translate into prizes.
According to the newspaper, prizes on offer in Cleethorpes included holidays in Las Vegas and Monte Carlo, televisions, a laptop and an iPod.
The LPPL has proved popular with landlords around the country looking to attract more customers on quiet nights. Because players compete for league points rather than cash, the league does not violate gambling laws.
