New poker event planned at Hartlepool hotel

Local people's poker skills used for charity fundraiser in Hartlepool.

Card sharps in Hartlepool have been invited to raise money for a charity of their choice by taking part in a game of poker.

George Stuart, owner of Hartlepool's Melbourne Hotel, is organising the special Texas hold'em poker tournament to take place at the venue on Thursday March 12th, the Hartlepool Mail reports.

To enter, players must have collected at least £20 in sponsorship money and decided on their chosen charity, with more chips available for people who amass more sponsorships.

The sponsors' cash will then be pooled together and split between the charities of the top six players on the night.

Mr Stuart told the newspaper: "People affected by any charity can come and take part.

"People are taking a risk, they might not win, but at least some charity will benefit."

In Essex, a poker event was recently organised by the Leigh Lions and Southend Radio to generate funds for local charities, the Essex Echo reports.
