Bingo firm seeking buyer for popular venue in West Yorkshire.
The closure of a well-loved bingo hall in Leeds has highlighted the difficulties currently facing the industry.Located in the Middleton area of Leeds, the Tivoli Bingo Club is a fixture of the local community, with many of its regulars having visited the hall for nearly 50 years.
However, falling attendances have led to Hertfordshire-based owner Top Ten Bingo putting the former cinema up for sale, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.
Club manager Andy Wood told the newspaper: "I'm afraid it's another casualty of the current financial climate. What with that and the smoking ban, people are being bludgeoned from all sides.
"It's been a bingo hall for 48 years since 1961."
Despite recent closures, owner of whichbingo.co.uk Phil Fraser has claimed that the growing popularity of online bingo could boost land-based exponents of the game.
He said that people who are introduced to bingo on the internet may be encouraged to play in more traditional surroundings.
