Local authority to decide on casino developer for Great Yarmouth next year.
Final applications for the licence to develop a new large casino in Great Yarmouth will be accepted in the autumn, the local authority has said.A provisional timetable for the casino bid process was unveiled by Great Yarmouth Borough Council at its tourism headquarters on Monday (March 23rd), the Advertiser reports.
According to the local newspaper, councillor Tim Howard said that the new gambling venue would be the "jewel in the crown" of the Norfolk resort's regeneration plans.
The winning casino bid is expected to be announced in late 2010, with several local developers already showing an interest in the project.
Albert Jones, who runs the Pleasure Beach in Great Yarmouth, has drawn up a proposal for a £35 million casino and leisure complex next to the resort's outer harbour.
Mr Howard said that the successful casino bidder would have to produce a scheme with "sustainable economic benefits for the local people".
Great Yarmouth is one of eight UK locations permitted to license a large casino under last year's gambling legislation.
