Coastal casino and hotel complex on the way in Morocco.

Sol Kerzner has insisted that the economic downturn will not affect the construction of his new casino resort in Morocco.

Situated on the Atlantic coast south of Casablanca, Kerzner International's Mazagan resort will contain a 500-room hotel, an 18-hole golf course and the north African country's largest casino.

Due for completion later this year, the gambling venue is expected to house about 400 slot machines and 50 gaming tables.

Mr Kerzner told Reuters that Mazagan could be profitable in its first year of operation, as the company's other reosrts are still making money despite the current financial climate.

He explained: "We're making money right now. Occupancy is in the high sixties - between 67 and 68 per cent. We are not cutting rates and we are definitely profitable."

Kerzner International has said that Mazagan will create about 1,500 jobs in the province of El Jadida.

Atlantis Paradise Island, Kerzner's flagship resort, contains a private marina and the largest casino in the Bahamas.
