Online Gambling Expected To Grow Despite Recession

Internet gambling sites will continue expansion, says betting consultant.

The global economic downturn will not prevent the expansion of online gambling markets, an industry expert has claimed.

Warwick Bartlett, lead partner of Global Betting and Gaming Consultants (GBGC), said that internet gambling operators still have room for "quite a lot of growth".

He suggested that online gaming firms are likely to benefit from a drop in the number of people visiting land-based casinos, with consumers looking to save money by cutting back on expensive nights out.

Mr Bartlett said that the online gambling sector is "increasing its market share against those bricks-and-mortar businesses".

He added: "The value on offer is greater than going to land-based premises and they don't have the cost of going there."

The growth of high-speed broadband services also gives cause for optimism in terms of the future of online gambling firms, Mr Bartlett stated.

In his recent Digital Britain report, communications minister Lord Carter said that every home in the UK should have access to broadband by 2012.
