The rift between Governer Bob Riley and Attorney General Troy King over electronic bingo has widened. The attorney general believes that the governor's illegal gambling task force is intruding on AG territory. King is taking the issue to court.
Last month the governor’s Task Force on Illegal Gambling raided White Hall so that they could use the raid as part of a test case.
The attorney general said “Filing a brief was not something I wanted to do, but it was something I felt I didn’t have any choice but to do.”
King was appointed to his position as attorney general by Riley five years ago, and while the two have similar political views in post places, they have a serious difference of opinion when it comes to gambling.
Governor Riley thinks that electronic gambling devices all fall under the category of ‘slot machines. The attorney general disagrees, saying “I don’t think it is a correct statement to say that there is no way to have an electronic version of bingo. I have an electronic version of solitaire on my computer at my house, and it’s solitaire just as sure as I’m sitting here. I’m not playing it with cards, I’m playing it with my computer.”
In the court briefing, King takes no position in the dispute over gambling, saying he just wants to make sure that the powers of the office of the attorney general are not taken away.
