Morecambe bingo hall still attracting players despite economic slump.
Many British people are turning to their local bingo hall as a source of entertainment during the economic downturn. This is according to the Lakeland Echo's Ingrid Kent, who recently visited Gala Bingo in Morecambe to see how the numbers game industry is coping with the impact of the recession.
She spoke to Mark Dowling, a member of the Morecambe venue's management team who has worked for Gala for 20 years.
He explained that bingo offers an attractive alternative to an expensive night out, with many people viewing the game as an ideal tonic to their recession-related worries.
"It's one of the few places you can end up with more money than you started out with," Mr Dowling told the newspaper.
"People are still coming and having a night out. Perhaps they are not spending quite as much when they are here, but it's still a fabulous night out," he added.
Earlier this month, the Peterborough Evening Telegraph reported that the town's Gala Bingo venue has seen its attendance levels increase by 400 per cent in recent months.
