California Warns Bingo Halls About New Law

The recent U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in San Francisco indicates that a new law banning electronic bingo machines from being used by charitable organizations went into effect on January 1st.

The California state’s attorney General’s Office warned that charitable bingo halls will have to adhere to the law, and reminded them that electronic bingo machines were now illegal.

Until recently, the law surrounding charity bingo halls has been under debate. Last year, the United Auburn Tribe said that they would withhold millions of dollars of revenue sharing money if charity bingo halls did not cease using electronic bingo machines. The tribe, which operates the Thunder Valley Casino in Placier County, was not happy with the competition they thought they would face from charity bingo halls

The United Cerebral Palsy was using electronic machines to raise money for several different programs. The debate over the legality of the machines has been going on for some time, and the United Cerebral Palsy was given permission to continue to operate the machines under a court injunction, but this injunction was overturned by the Court of Appeals in March of this year.
