Bingo club due to close down in Cambridge after falling attendance levels.
Bingo fans in Cambridge a preparing to bid farewell to a much-loved venue. The city's Gala Bingo club, a former cinema building in Hobson Street, is set to close its doors for the last time next month after being sold to a property developer.
According to the Cambridge News, the bingo venue has struggled to cope with the impact of the smoking ban and increased taxation, while the growth of online bingo is creating a challenging market for land-based operators.
Local woman Helen Hopcraft described the closure as "a real shame" and fondly recalled her £24,000 win at the club in 2006.
"It was so exciting to win. We had a holiday in Mexico, I gave my four kids £1,000 each and did up the house. It was fantastic," the 54-year-old told the newspaper.
"The last time I was there it was half as full as it used to be. It's a blow for bingo lovers," she added.
Gala Bingo is the UK's largest bingo operator, with over 175 clubs and five million members.
