Coren does not want private poker at Victoria

Victoria Coren has questioned the decision to open a private poker room at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London.

The poker room at the Edgware Road venue moved to 24-hour opening hours earlier this month and has announced plans to introduce a private gaming area soon.

However, Guardian poker columnist Coren is concerned that the move could create an unwelcome air of elitism at the Victoria, which serves as an unofficial headquarters for London's professional poker players.

"Poker is a game of equality, where newcomers and world champions have always sat side by side," she writes.

"After all, everybody's playing for sums that are significant to them. We're all the same."

Coren also reiterated her recent claim that cash games in the capital have become "big and bloated" recently, despite the current economic difficulties.

A member of Team PokerStars Pro, Coren became the first woman to win a European Poker Tour (EPT) title when she won the main event at EPT London in 2006, earning £500,000.
