Shearer has taken over at Newcastle

Shearer's appointment at Newcastle leads to sports betting activity.

The surprise appointment of Alan Shearer as Newcastle United manager has led to a flurry of activity in sports betting markets.

Shearer has been placed in charge of the struggling north-east side for the final eight games of the Premier League season, with supporters hoping that the much-loved former striker can save his hometown club from relegation.

According to Sky Bet, the 38-year-old's appointment has already seen many punters back Newcastle to avoid the drop.

"Shearer's arrival is the boost that Newcastle desperately need to haul themselves out of the relegation zone and already this morning money is coming in for them to stay up," the betting firm's Helen Jacob said yesterday (April 1st).

Newcastle entertain title-chasing Chelsea in the first match of the Shearer reign at St James' Park on Saturday, with Sky Bet offering 5/1 on a home victory.

Meanwhile, William Hill has odds of 14/1 on the former Blackburn Rovers player succeeding Fabio Capello as England manager.
