Plan to transform Hippodrome into new casino are going ahead.
United Leisure Gaming (ULG) has confirmed its plans to convert the London Hippodrome into a gambling venue. The company will undertake a £15 million restoration project before reopening the famous Leicester Square nightspot as a casino and live cabaret theatre, the Evening Standard reports.
Previous reports had suggested that the casino project would never see the light of day, but ULG chairman Simon Thomas told the newspaper that his firm intends to "return the Hippodrome to its rightful place as one of the country's leading leisure destinations".
Scheduled to open in 2011, the new-look Hippodrome will become the largest casino venue in central London and is set to include a restaurant run by a Michelin-starred chef.
Many original features of the Grade II-listed building, such as mosaics and Flemish Renaissance plasterwork, will be restored as part of the redevelopment.
La Clique, the popular cabaret and burlesque show currently inhabiting the Hippodrome, is due to end its run on June 14th.
