Journalist celebrates winning first prize at Virgin Poker Festival.
Ross Jarvis, a journalist for PokerPlayer magazine, came out on top at the Newcastle Poker Festival on Sunday (April 5th).Taking place at the north-east city's Aspers Casino, the popular two-day poker event attracted a capacity field of 200 to create a prize pool of £30,000.
Jarvis defeated local player Kris McLackland to win the £7,000 first prize after a 90-minute heads-up session, with Andy Edgington finishing in third place and Brian Clarke taking fourth.
"The £7,000 is by far the biggest score in my poker 'career' and was the perfect tonic after a number of near-misses and epic blowups in big tournaments before," Jarvis wrote on the PokerPlayer website.
"After putting that much pressure on myself it was a huge relief to reach the end," he added.
The first Virgin Poker Festival took place at the Broadway Casino in Birmingham in November 2007, while last year saw events held in Newcastle, Nottingham and London.
