Mon Mome wins Grand National

Bookmakers celebrate after Mon Mome upsets the odds at Aintree.

Mon Mome's shock win in the Grand National has given bookmakers a "shot in the arm", according to an industry expert.

Charlie McCann, head of public relations at sports betting firm Stan James, said that the 100-1 shot's surprise victory in the Aintree showpiece was a welcome boost for the betting industry.

Trained by Venetia Williams and ridden by Liam Treadwell, the unfancied nine-year-old stunned punters and delighted bookmakers by romping to a 12-length victory last Saturday (April 4th).

"It was a shot in the arm for the bookmaking industry, of that there can be no doubt … it was a good day for the bookmaking industry," Mr McCann said.

Mon Mome was the first 100-1 horse to win the Grand National since Foinavon in 1967.

Mr McCann also suggested that betting firms are continuing to attract punters despite the economic downturn.

"Our turnover on the big meetings like the Grand National and Cheltenham Festival has been fine. There is a thought that people like the idea, in times of recession, of having a wager," he explained.
