Sports Betting: Punters Still Optimistic Over Newcastle

Bookmaker cuts odds on Newcastle escaping relegation.

Bookmaker William Hill has cut its odds on Newcastle United avoiding relegation from the Premier League, despite the struggling side's 0-0 draw with Portsmouth on Monday night (April 27th).

That result left the north-east outfit three points off safety with a trip to Liverpool next up on Sunday, but it seems that punters are still expecting Alan Shearer to lead the Magpies to safety.

William Hill lengthened its price on Newcastle avoiding the drop immediately after the Portsmouth game, but was forced to trim the odds after taking a flurry of bets on their survival.

The sports betting firm now offers 7/4 on Newcastle staying in the top-flight and 2/5 that they are relegated to the Championship.

"The fans seem to be more optimistic about the rest of the season than Shearer himself," commented William Hill spokesperson Graham Sharpe.

Newcastle have scored just one goal and are yet to register a victory in the four games since the former England striker took over.
