The $743 million Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem opened its doors for the first time yesterday, to a crowd of about 700 patrons, who had queued up to be among the first to try the new casino.
By early afternoon, more than 7,000 players had entered the casino to try out it’s huge range of casino games, entertainment, and dining option; including more than 3,000 slot machines, two lounges, and four restaurants.
The casino’s grand opening is scheduled for June 9th, with Gov. Rendell and Sheldon Adelson – chairman of the Las Vegas Sands Corp, to be among the attendees.
Ron Reese, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Sands, said “It’s been a very smooth soft opening”.
The new Sands Bethlehem stands on the 163-acre site of the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. Several of the original steelmaking buildings are still present, and there are large coils, gears, and beams protruding from the ceiling as a tribute to the history of the site.
