Councillors back casino plan in Bath, stress that plans are still in early stages.
The city of Bath has taken a step closer to getting a new casino after council officials voted in favour of plans to begin the licensing process.Despite opposition from some local groups, members of Bath and North East Somerset Council agreed that preparation for a casino development should proceed to the next stage.
According to the Bath Chronicle, the council has predicted that a gambling venue would bring 200 new jobs to the city, as well as boosting the local economy by approximately £7 million each year.
The local authority is aware that a casino could attract many more visitors to Bath, a city which already relies heavily on tourist revenue.
However, councillor Terry Gazzard told the BBC that the project is still in the early stages, with the casino unlikely to be built within the next two years.
"If I gave you a date I'd be misleading you. All I'll say is we're ready to go to the next stage," he commented.
Work will now begin on finalising the criteria for casino bidders and looking at potential sites for the venue, of which six have been identified.
