Las Vegas event offers golf with a poker twist

World Series of Golf gets underway in casino and poker capital Las Vegas.

An event in which golfers bet on individual holes as if they were poker hands gets underway in Las Vegas today (May 12th).

The World Series of Golf was founded in 2007 by Terry Leiweke, who wanted to introduce an additional element of risk and reward to the traditional game of golf.

Players pay $10,000 (£6,529) to buy in to the competition and treat each hole as if it were a pot at the poker table, with the option to call, check or raise opponents before each shot.

Mr Leiweke told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the format is a "little shot in the arm" for those accustomed to the conventional version of the game.

"You have to be able to play well to win and you have to be able to bet wisely to win it," he told the newspaper.

The World Series of Golf is taking place at Paiute Golf Resort in Las Vegas until Friday.

Meanwhile, poker pro Daniel Negreanu has announced details of a charity golf tournament for poker players and members of the public to coincide with this year's World Series of Poker.

Negreanu's Big Swing will take place on June 25th to raise money for the Lili Claire Foundation, a Las Vegas-based children's charity.
