Controversy over bingo tax increase continues with Gloucester MP joining the opposition.
Disgruntled bingo fans in Gloucester have found a willing champion for their cause in the shape of local MP Parmjit Dhanda.Responding to growing concerns over the recent increase in bingo tax, the Labour politician has pledged to table an early day motion in support of the industry in Westminster next week, the Forester reports.
Mr Dhanda, who is set to speak with representatives of Mecca Bingo later this week, described the bingo tax hike as "a crucial issue".
He told the newspaper: "I have offered to table the motion to support the bingo industry, which would hopefully be done early next week.
"Hundreds and hundreds of Gloucester people like to play the bingo, but there are also lots of local jobs that depend on it as an industry."
Numbers game enthusiasts are worried that the government's decision to increase bingo duty from 15 per cent to 22 per cent could lead to the closure of more bingo halls.
There are currently three bingo venues in Gloucester, one operated by Mecca and two run by Gala Bingo.
Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson recently spoke out against the tax hike during a debate in the House of Commons.
