Sports betting firms take wagers on 2018 World Cup bid, with England the early favourites.

England's bid to stage the World Cup in 2018 or 2022 has created significant interest in sports betting markets.

The England bid team held a launch party at Wembley Stadium on Monday (May 18th), with David Beckham drafted in to promote the project and Gordon Brown confirming the government's commitment to the bid.

As a result, Sky Bet makes England its current favourite to host the 2018 World Cup at 11/10, while Australia is available at 4/1 and the joint bid from Spain and Portugal can be backed at 8/1.

"With first-class grounds, good transport links and a huge fan base, England can be optimistic about its chances of hosting the World Cup in 2018," commented Sky Bet's Helen Jacobs.

Meanwhile, punters backing England to host and win the tournament in 2018 can get odds of 25/1 with the bookmaker.

Fifa's executive committee is due to announce the host nations of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments in December next year.
