The UK bingo tax issue is continuing to escalate – this time after 160 players and the staff oc the Mecca Bingo Chain in Exeter called on their local MP, Ben Bradshaw, to block the UK Governments plans to increase bingo duty from 15% to 22%.
Davina Warden, manager of Exeter’s Mecca Bingo hall, said “Our customers just can’t understand why the Government is targeting bingo. It just doesn’t seem to be fair that someone can go to the bookies and place a bet and only pay 15% tax, whilst one of our customers has to pay 22%.”
Warden continued “To our customers, this is about so much more than just bingo. For some, this is the only opportunity they have to socialise with other people and it would be criminal if clubs are forced to close because the Government is discriminating against one of the nation’s favourite past times. That’s why we are uriging the Government to keep tax at 15 per cent and not increase it to 22%”.
The bingo community in Exeter is lobbying their local MP to change what they feel is an absurd taxation law. They believe that the law may cause more bingo halls to close down, because it eats into the takings that the operators need in order to keep trading.
