Rugby League star shows poker skills

Super League crowns Ryan Atkins as new poker champion.

Rugby star Ryan Atkins is officially the best poker player in the Super League after winning a special tournament in Leeds on Tuesday (May 5th).

The Wakefield Wildcats centre outlasted 64 other players to triumph in the inaugural Super League Poker Challenge at the West Yorkshire city's Gala Casino, with Kevin Brown of the Huddersfield Giants taking second and Leeds Rhinos winger Ryan Hall finishing third.

After Atkins pocketed the first prize of £4,000 following seven hours of Texas hold'em action, Gala Casino boss David Croft hailed the event as a major success.

"The competition went terrifically well and was such a great night that I am hoping to repeat it at the end of the season," he told the Sun.

Some of Super League's biggest stars took part in the poker tournament, including Leon Pryce and Sean Long of St Helens, Leeds' Rob Burrow and Robbie Paul of Salford City Reds.
