Another gaming title has fallen foul of Australia’s tough classification regime. This title, however, is not a gory first-person shooter or triple-A action game. The title in question is an upcoming WiiWare game called ‘Sexy Poker’.
Sexy Poker was developed by Gameloft, and has been refused classification by Australia’s classifications board, meaning that the game is effectively banned from sale in the country.
Sexy Poker is a strip poker game where the player is pitted against six different female opponents, who are dressed in stereotypical outfits such as police uniforms, nurses outfits, sports gear, and businesswear. The Board said that the game was refused classification because nudity ws used as an incentive.
The Board issued a statement which said “In the Board’s view Sexy Poker offers depictions of nudity as an incentive or reward to interactive game play. In the Board’s view, the general rule in the guidelines for the Classification of Films and Computer Games prohibiting depictions of nudity as an incentive or reward, applies to the game play described above, as the player is shown increasingly detailed amounts of nudity following successful game-play. In the view of the Board, the impact of the game exceeds strong as except in material restricted to adults, nudity and sexual activity mus not be related to incentives or rewards. As such, the game cannot be accommodated in a MA15+ classification.”
There is no R18+ rating for games in Australia, so the game is effectively banned for sale in the country. Sexy Poker is the second game to have been banned in Australia this year. The other one was Necrovision, which was banned in April, but has since been reclassified to an M rating following changes made by the developer.
