Rank Group chief executive claims higher tax rate could create unemployment.
Rank Group chief executive Ian Burke has slammed the government's decision to raise bingo duty to 22 per cent.Mr Burke described the higher tax rate as "vindictive" and claimed that it could lead to many more bingo venues closing down and thousands of jobs being lost around the UK, the Sun reports.
He also suggested that the tax hike is likely to alienate many traditional Labour supporters and create more problems for an already crisis-stricken government.
"What I find most staggering is that bingo players are typically in Labour heartlands," Mr Burke told the newspaper.
"Yet we have had more support from Conservatives, the SNP and the Lib Dems than anyone in government."
The Mecca Bingo chain, which is owned by Rank, has been urging its members to write to their local MPs and protest over the tax changes.
Earlier this week, Rank's claim for a VAT refund of £59.1 million on interval bingo games was upheld by the High Court.
