Bingo clubs facing troubled times in the UK

Former Gala Bingo manager explains how British bingo clubs can fight back.

The UK's bingo clubs can recover from recent setbacks by enticing more people through their doors, an industry expert has claimed.

Writing in the Times today (June 22nd), former managing director of Gala Bingo Steve McKenna says that land-based bingo operators should focus on increasing attendance levels.

He believes that encouraging more people to visit their local bingo venue and offering customers greater value for money will ensure that the industry survives its current crisis.

"The sector must invest in growing the business, with an increase in admissions the key target," Mr McKenna explains.

"This will be about effective marketing plus improving the bingo product through innovation and increasing the value for the customer."

He also claims that bingo firms can "take heart" from the way the numbers game recovered from the launch of the National Lottery in 1994, when a substantial amount of business was taken away from the industry.

Last week, the Times reported that Gala Coral is set to consult staff on the closure of six of its UK bingo venues, potentially resulting in the loss of 180 jobs, as the industry continues to struggle with the impact of the recession and a higher tax rate.
