Lincolnshire resort to consider other development projects after casino plan is shelved.
Plans to build a new gambling venue in Skegness have been shelved due to the recession, it has emerged. At a meeting of council members in the Lincolnshire coastal resort last week, it was revealed that the casino proposal will be postponed indefinitely as a result of the economic downturn, thisisskegness.co.uk reports.
Nigel Howells, chief executive of East Lindsey District Council, said at the meeting: "With regard to the casino site, the industry in general has gone very quiet.
"Budgets have hit the gambling industry hard and the current outlook is quite bleak."
The shelving of the casino plan means that attention has turned back to the southern foreshore project, which aims to revamp the area of Skegness once occupied by the Festival Pavilion.
One idea involves a sculpture park showcasing the work of local and regional artists.
East Lindsey was one of 17 local authorities granted a new casino licence by the government in 2007.
