The online gaming community had a few panicked moments last week, when echeck depositing functions went down for all online poker sites. Fortunately, it seems that the problem was a temporary one, and the functionality is being restored, with the Cerus Network being among the first to bring the deposit functionality back online.
The reason for the recent issues with echeck depositing is not yet known. Some experts have speculated that the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) has played a part in the issue. Others believe that the US Attorney General’s office had a hand in the problems, but, more grounded people have pointed out, this is not the first time that there have been issues with echeck deposits. The problem is likely to have been something more simple.
The problem affected all electronic check processors. Players attempting to make a deposit were greeted with a generic message telling them that they had insufficient funds to process the payment, even if they had enough funds in their account. Other deposit methods were unaffected.
A spokesperson for the electronic check company “Instant eCheck” said “This is a customer service nightmare and is starting to cost us revenues and credibility.”
