Developer wants to bring casino gambling to Guildford town centre.
A new gambling venue could be on the way in Guildford after local businessman Michel Harper was granted a new licence for his nightclubs in the Surrey town.Planning inspector Martin Andrews has approved a 'mixed use' licence for the nightclubs, meaning that he is allowed to use them as a casino, amusement arcade, bingo and concert hall, getsurrey.co.uk reports.
However, Guildford Borough Council is still against casinos in the area and Mr Harper must convince the local authority that his plans will not have a negative impact on the town.
He told the news provider: "I'm inviting the council to review its policy. It was so unnecessary for it to refuse the latest application.
"This is a new planning permission but I think it would good for the area during these difficult financial times. This allows us to diversify and, hopefully, we can use this new permission in quite an inspiring way."
According to a survey carried out in 2006, only 16 per cent of Guildford residents would support a new casino in the town.
