Plymouth Casino Prepares For Historic Boxing Event

Gambling venue hopes to raise money for amateur boxing club with special event.

A gaming venue in Plymouth is set to become the first English casino to host a boxing match tonight (June 25th).

Eight bouts are due to take place at the Grosvenor Casino on Derry's Cross, with former Commonwealth heavyweight boxing champion Nicky Piper hosting proceedings, local newspaper the Herald reports.

Mayflower Amateur Boxing Club is providing some of the fighters, while two casino customers and a member of staff will also be taking part after training for the event.

Jay Pillai, general manager at the casino, told the newspaper: "This is the first time a boxing match has taken place within an English casino and we are looking forward to bringing some of the excitement and thrill of Las Vegas to Plymouth."

The casino hopes to raise £3,000 for the Mayflower Amateur Boxing Club by organising the event.

For those who prefer to avoid pugilism on their visits to the casino, the Grosvenor venue offers a poker room and various live table games such as blackjack and roulette.
