The Poker Players Alliance is hosting a petition on their web site, asking President Obama to acknowledge the many United States residents who enjoy online poker.
Online poker sites are encouraging players to sign the document, with some, including PokerStars, offering special tournaments for players who sign the petition.
The online petition is a part of the lead up to Poker Week, which will be taking place next month. Poker Week is the centre of the PPA's campaign for regulation of poker in the US.
Professional poker player Howard Lederer said of the campaign, “Protecting Americans' right to play poker – whether online or around the poker table – is something everyone should support even if you don't play. Restricting what we can do online in the privacy of our own home is a slippery slope, which is why I am coming to Washington for National Poker week – to tell my members of Congress to protect my rights.”
Several professional poker players have joined the campaign, including Andy Bloch, Annie Duke, Jan Fisher, Linda Johnson, and Dennis Phillips.
As well as meeting with Congress, the PPA will be hosting a charity poker tournament to benefit the USO and the Malone House at Walter Reed Army Medical Centre.
