Andy Murray's pre-Wimbledon form is creating interest in sports betting markets.
Andy Murray's victory at Queen's Club yesterday (June 14th) has seen his odds of winning Wimbledon cut to just 5/2 with some sports betting firms. The 22-year-old Scot beat American James Blake 7-5, 6-4 in the Aegon Championships final, sealing his first grass-court title and becoming the first Briton to win at Queen's since Bunny Austin in 1938.
Murray did not lose a set on the way to winning the trophy and his sparkling form is creating considerable excitement among British tennis fans, with Wimbledon getting underway on June 22nd.
At 5/2 with William Hill, Murray is now the shortest-priced British player at Wimbledon since Fred Perry, who won the famous championship in 1934, 1935 and 1936.
"Murray looks to have everything in his favour going into Wimbledon and at long last the perennial bookie nightmare of a Brit winning the tournament looks probable rather than possible," said William Hill spokesperson Graham Sharpe.
Five-time champion Roger Federer is the 11/10 favourite for Wimbledon, with Rafael Nadal a 3/1 bet and Novak Djokovic 7/1.
